VSC 6.x Policy-Driven Storage with VVOLs

Presenter: Anne Achleman
Original air date: Tuesday, February 23, 2016.

vSphere 6.0 on NetApp Clustered Data ONTAP 8.3 supports the new NetApp plugin for VMware called Virtual Storage Console 6.0 (VSC) with VASA Provider for Clustered Data ONTAP v6 integration of VMware Storage Policy-Based Management (SPBM) functionality to overcome upfront storage provisioning challenges, such as capacity planning, differentiated service level and managing resource headroom.

NetApp’s Software-Defined Storage (SDS) architectural model leverage’s VMware’s goal to dynamically deliver storage services on a per-VM basis from the hypervisor based on policies rather than time-consuming process of managing each storage system independently. NetApp VASA Provider (VP) advertises NetApp storage capabilities to VMware using self-defined profiles, simplifying VM storage management according to the specific needs of each workload. With this new storage visibility, VMware administrators can intelligently place VMs on either traditional datastores or new vSphere 6 VVOLs and NetApp VP will monitor ongoing VM storage compliance requirements, independent of the VMware or storage administration teams, for greater agility.
