Who should attend
This course is for system administrators and technical support staff who are tasked with designing and implementing a disaster recovery strategy using BMR, and testing and performing the disaster recovery plan.
Prerequisites
It is assumed that students have a working knowledge of
NetBackup. Students must be able to create NetBackup
policies, run manual backups and navigate the NetBackup
admin console. Although students can select either Windows or
Linux as their primary platform for the lab exercises, some
familiarity of the other OS would be helpful.
Hands-On
This course includes practical hands-on exercises which allow
students to explore the BMR functionality, test their BMR
knowledge and master the stated course objectives.
Course Objectives
The objectives of this course are to enable the student to
setup and implement BMR with the NetBackup
environment, provide the student with an understanding
of how BMR works and demonstrate how to design a
disaster recovery strategy using BMR. By the completion
of this course the student will be able to:
- Identify the role BMR plays in the NetBackup environment
- Describe the key components that compose the BMR architecture
- Define common terms that relate to the BMR product
- List the steps that are performed during a BMR client restore operation
- Identify the general steps to prepare for deployment of BMR systems
- Setup the BMR master and boot servers on Windows and Linux
- Configure a NetBackup policy to collect BMR information
- Describe the function of a Shared Resource Tree (SRT)
- Create, manage and modify network-based and mediabased SRTs for Windows and Linux clients
- Describe the options for booting a failed client
- Configure the BMR PXE and BMR MFTP services on a Windows boot server
- Describe the recovery process of a Windows/Linux client initiated by both a network and media boot
- Identify the BMR processes that run on the master server, boot server and client
- View, configure and manage BMR logs
- Perform client restores using external procedures
- Perform a point in time restore
- Restore a Windows client to hardware different than the original hardware
- Restore a Windows/Linux client to a different disk configuration
- Configure Auto Image Replication and recover a client at a remote site
- Recover a client on a physical machine to a virtual machine (P2V).
Course Content
Bare Metal Restore (BMR) is a license free feature of
Symantec NetBackup that enables the automated
recovery of Windows and UNIX servers in a variety of
disaster recovery scenarios ranging from the loss of a
single boot disk to the loss of a data center.
The Symantec NetBackup 7.6 Bare Metal Restore:
Administration course covers the implementation of BMR
within the NetBackup environment and the general
principles of using BMR to develop a disaster recovery
strategy. Hands-on labs provide the IT professional with
experience in the functionality of the Symantec Bare
Metal Restore 7.6 software both on the Windows and on
Linux platforms.
This includes how to:
- Setup BMR in both Windows and Linux environments
- Prepare the tools necessary for the recovery of Windows and Linux clients
- Recover Windows and Linux clients to similar hardware
- Recover Windows and Linux clients to dissimilar hardware
- Use NetBackup’s Auto Image Replication and BMR’s physical to virtual conversion feature to design a robust DR strategy
