VCE Vblock Systems Advanced Administration and Management; Performance and Troubleshooting (VCE-1LP-VCEVBAMADV)


Who should attend

This course is intended for VCE Customers, Partners and VCE Personnel who are responsible for administering, or supporting the administrator of a Vblock System which has been in place for at least six months.


To understand the content and successfully complete this course, a student must have a suitable knowledgebase/skillset. The student must have basic Vblock System Administration experience including:

  • Administering Vblock systems using both GUI and CLI management tools including: VCE Vision, VMware vCenter, UCS Manager, Cisco NX-OS, and EMC Unisphere for VNX or VMAX
  • Configuring additional storage on an EMC VNX, XtremIO or VMAX system made visible to a Vblock hosted ESX Server
  • Installing and configuring a new ESX Server using UCS service profiles/templates
  • Setting up and utilizing Vblock System logs for problem determination
  • Setting up alerting and monitoring on Vblock components

The student must also have a basic understanding of:

  • Microsoft Windows and UNIX/Linux administration and operation
  • Concept of server, storage, and access path virtualization
  • Knowledge of Fibre Channel SAN zoning and virtualization

Course Objectives

At the end of this course, a student should be able to:

  • Describe the recommended troubleshooting methodology and demonstrate how to detect and recover from Vblock System failure events
  • Demonstrate how to perform a Vblock systems performance baseline, monitor performance information, analyze performance, and implement a tuning fix
  • Transparently move a datastore using Storage vMotion
  • Migrate a SAN-boot host from one UCS blade to another
  • Describe the VCE Shared Management Platform

Course Content

This course covers advanced administration topics for experienced VCE Vblock Systems administrators. It is assumed that students have basic knowledge and experience performing VCE Vblock System administration and are looking for insight into more advanced management. The course will best serve students who have been administering a VCE Vblock for at least six months and want a deeper skill set of how to deal with evolving troubleshooting and performance issues.

The Vblock Advanced Administration course is just one resource that supports VCE Certified Converged Infrastructure Master Administration Engineer (VCE-CIMAE).
